TWELVE

Brianne followed Gavin’s lead. She kept her gaze on him for a brief moment and then turned to find several sets of curious but cool eyes on both of them.

Inhaling, she let go of Gavin’s arm and held Tommy by his leash, steadying him as they entered the ritzy crowd. People dressed in glittering clothes, torn jeans with diamonds, bright blond long hair with short red dresses, short dark bobs and all black clothing, men in button-up shirts and polished loafers, some in suits with glee in their eyes. Some ignoring everything and everyone while they stared at the incredible view of historic townhouses and the Hudson River off in the distance.

She noticed a woman doing just that, a champagne glass in her hand, a diamond tennis bracelet sparkling against her porcelain skin. Her inky black hair fell in expensive layers down over her shoulders. Her cream-colored suit shouted Armani.

And when she turned, her eyes caught Brianne’s. A cold smile and then the woman moved on.

Something about the other woman left Brianne cold, too. Too rich to be friendly.

Before she could say anything to Gavin, Justin Sanelli hurried toward them. “The Reinharts. So glad you came. Grab some champagne and I’ll personally give you the tour. I think you’ll like this place.”

Brianne made a face. “But, Justin, this is all new and shiny. We wanted to find a fixer-upper. You know, a building we can put our own stamp on.”

“Of course,” the agent said. He twisted the gold ring he wore on his left finger. “Just see what you think and then I’ll explain how to make that dream come true.” Then he laughed. “The previous building on the property was in a mess when we bought it. Crumbling and out of date and most of it destroyed by a tragic fire. We’ve built one of the most sought-after properties in Tribeca.”

“I’m impressed,” Brianne said with a smile, while she sent Gavin a knowing nod. Justin obviously loved making things happen in the real estate world.

He moved them through the crowd with ease, smiling and patting people on the back as he went. Brianne had worried about people wanting to pet Tommy but others had brought lap dogs in huge purses, while some held tiny dogs in their arms, so what was one more animal in the crowd?

Tommy marched along with her. Gavin warned her Tommy might not pick up a scent with so many perfumes and other scents merging in the spacious living and kitchen areas of the apartment. The dog, used to crowds, had been trained on how to react and not react, but this crowd was different.

Tommy, however, did his job in a subtle way, sniffing here and there, his head going up and then down. So far, he hadn’t alerted on anyone in particular.

“Let’s start with the master bedroom,” Justin said as he moved up a short staircase. “It covers the entire top floor, closet space is huge and the bathroom is like a spa.”

They passed the dark-haired woman on the stairs.
